The valley of Cogne is rightly considered one of the most beautiful valley in Aosta valley and in the whole apline.

It is Famous for its magnetite mines – who gave the name to the huge foundry called COGNE” in Aosta – Today, they are no more productive but are open to the public, their story has been collected in an interesting museum. It is known to be the capital of the firts italian park (from the beginning and for its importance) the national park of Gran Paradiso, was created where the king of italy had once hunted, the only peak around is of over 4000 m high. Completely italian, Gran Paradiso; the fact that the territory is well protected, allows everybody including non hikers to get closer to inaccessible animals like chamois and ibex.

The territory

The morphological structure of the territory makes Cogne unique, the chief town (Veulla) overlooks a vast grassland without woodlands existing on the alps, the meadows of S.Orso.

The Valnontey, a narrow V like valley in the park ends below the glaciers of Gran paradiso, depicts one of the most photographed scenery of the alps.

The hamlest

The hamlets ( villages) are all very different from one another : Lillaz is famous for its waterfalls, Gimillan is known for being a sunny balcony opposite the mountains and Epinel for being below Grivola mountain and in front of a woodland of fir trees and larch trees known to be one of the most beautiful woodland in the region.
